The Nuggets and free agent center Chris Andersen are very close to a contract extension that will keep the NBA's second-leading shotblocker in Denver on a multi-year deal. The amicable discussions have gone on since the weekend, and the new deal could be completed as early as Wednesday, after the official 2009-10 salary cap numbers are known. Those numbers, including the cap figure and the exact amount of exceptions to the cap, should be released late Tuesday

Nuggets close to re-signing Andersen Nothing new here, but the deal seems to be getting closer. Just get it done already

"Experience is the best teacher," Billups said of what the Nuggets learned during a playoff run that followed five straight seasons of losing in the first round. "Now, these guys have been through a lot in just one season, grew up a lot. . . . There are a lot of good teams over here in the Western Conference. We proved to be one of the best ones. But, when you get to this point, you can’t take steps back because there’s always somebody right on your heels to take that leap as well."

There's only one No. 7 in Colorado ---- and it's not Chauncey

Chauncey Billups is changing his number back to #1 instead of the #7 we've all become used to. CB1? Doesn't roll as well. Thanks to nycbroncos fan from Mile High Report for the link!

Marc Stein with some Nuggets rumors

Keep in mind these are all rumors: Nuggets looking at Grant Hill: "Fresh off a trip to the Western Conference finals, Denver keeps coming up as a team hot for Hill, who earned less than $4 million over the past two seasons with the Suns." Andersen could come to verbal agreement soon: "The vibe I'm getting already is that the Nuggets should be able to secure a verbal commitment from Chris Andersen on a new contract -- their first shot-blocker off the bench and the most popular Nugget not named Chauncey or Carmelo -- in fairly fast fashion." Kleiza to the Cavs? "... there's a fair bit of belief in Ohio that it would be better to add more of a rangy 3/4 type to counter the likes of Lamar Odom and Rashard Lewis -- someone like Villanueva or the more affordable Linas Kleiza -- than Rasheed Wallace or Antonio McDyess." Cleveland, though, can offer only a contract starting at full midlevel (at roughly $5.6 million)." UPDATE: Channing Frye meeting Thanks to gnarlybroncodude for sharing the link from CBS Sports: "...the Nuggets were meeting with Portland unrestricted free agent Channing Frye as the clock struck midnight ET. Nobody does more with less than the Nuggets, who would benefit from Frye’s pick-and-pop ability without breaking the bank."

Sports Illustraded takes a stab at the Nuggets offseason targets

Introduction: Second week of June, the rest of the NBA bunkering down for the draft, and Mark Warkentien, the Nuggets vice president of basketball operations, is at a Harvard Law seminar on negotiating. That's all anybody needs to know about how important the Denver big bosses consider this free-agent summer.

Nuggets expected to qualify Kleiza, not Petro

The Denver Post is reporting that the Nuggets plan to submit a qualifying offer to Linas Kleiza, that will make him a Restricted Free Agent. The Nuggets are not expected to submit a qualifying offer to Johan Petro, making him an Unrestricted Free Agent free to sign with any team.

Spurs add Richard Jefferson in 3 for 1 deal

The Spurs get a pretty dynamic player who still has a lot of game left in him for 3 stiffs (Bruce Bowen, Kurt Thomas, and Fabricio Oberto). This move should also give the Bucks enough salary cap relief to re-sign point guard Ramon Sessions ... ending any hopes of the Nuggets making any kind of run at him.
