The Melo Trade Over 7 Years Later

On February 22, 2011 the following players and assets were acquired by the Nuggets in the Carmelo trade.

Wilson Chandler

Raymond Felton

Danilo Gallinari

Kosta Koufos

Timofey Mozgov

2012 2nd (Quincy Miller)

2013 2nd (Romero Osby)

2014 1st (Dario Saric)

2016 1st round pick swap (Jamal Murray)

$3M Cash

Wilson Chandler

  • Traded recently in a salary dump. Remaining ties are the 2022 pick swap with Philly (only if Philly exercises swap right and we pick in Philly’s place).

Raymond Felton

  • Ray was traded for Andre Miller, Jordan Hamilton and a 2nd round pick (Roy Marble). Andre Miller later traded for Jan Vesely who played out his contract. Jordan Hamilton was traded for Aaron Brooks who played out his contract. Roy Marble was traded with Fournier as part of the trade netting Afflalo (for his second go around with the team, see 2014 1st detail below). Afflalo and Alonzo Gee were then later traded for Will Barton, Victor Claver, Thomas Robinson and the pick that became Malik Beasley. Claver and Robinson were both waived.

Danillo Gallinari

  • Feels like he left in FA but there is a 2019 Wizards 2nd round draft pick incoming from the S&T three team deal with Atlanta and the Clippers but the pick could go to Orlando in the Vanderbilt deal if we have one of the 5 best records next season because then we convey our own pick to Milwaukee from a separate deal and in that case Orlando would get the Washington pick. If we don’t have one of the 5 best records in the league next season then Orlando gets the worse pick between Denver’s and Washington’s. Chances are we keep the Wizards pick and send our pick to Orlando.

Kosta Koufos

  • Kosta was traded for DA and Joffrey Lauvergne. Joffrey was later traded for two 2nd’s to OKC netting Monte Morris and Vlatko Cancar. DA gone in salary dump.

Timomefy Mozgov

  • Tim was traded for two 1st’s. Ending up as: Korkmaz (pick traded to Philly in Javale salary dump) and Harry Giles. The pick that became Giles was traded to Portland with Nurkic for Plumlee, Cash and a 2nd round pick. That 2nd round pick later was traded in a package with Mudiay for Devin Harris and the Clippers 2nd. Finally that Clippers 2nd turned into Justin Jackson who was traded to Orlando on draft night along with a 2nd round pick next year (the worse pick between Denver’s and Washington’s) for Jarred Vanderbilt.

2014 1st and the 2012 and 2013 2nd’s

  • The 2014 1st and 2013 2nd were traded to Orlando along with Afflalo and Harrington to acquire Iguadala. Iguadala was later traded for Randy Foye and a 2nd round pick (Thomas Welsh). Randy Foye was later traded for DJ Augustine, Steve Novak, two 2nd round picks (Petr Cornelie and Daniel Hamilton). Hamilton traded for cash. Novak waived. DJ Augustine played out his contract. Quincy Miller the 2012 2nd round pick was cut and plays in Europe now.

2016 1st round pick swap

Exercised pick swap and picked Jamal Murray!

Barton, Beasley, Plumlee, Vanderbilt, Welsh and Cornelie are a stretch to add to Denver’s remaining assets as they required additional assets to acquire (Afflalo, Harrington, Fournier, Nurkic, Mudiay, draft picks, etc). Nonetheless it is interesting to see how many players were connected to the Melo trade one way or another.

The rest did not require any additional assets to acquire.

  • Jamal Murray
  • Monte Morris
  • Vlatko Cancar
  • Wizards 2019 2nd round pick (probable to convey)
  • Pick swap with Philly in 2022 2nd round (only if Philly exercises swap)
