TPM™ 2018-'19 Game 3 vs Golden State

This upstart assembly may just have what it takes to contend for a playoff position.

warriors-nuggets-basketball-3.0.jpg

Denver should look to exploit this match-up if the Warriors again deploy this strategy.

Not so "Wu hoo" if Barton's injury is revealed to be serious. Keepin' the seat warm for him.

Now that those tired sentiments are out of the way...

When last these two teams squared off, Denver enjoyed double digit TPM performances from five players, led by Darrell Arthur +13, Jamal Murray +15, Nikola Jokic +17 and Gary Harris & Will Barton +19. Thankfully, no players were in the red and the Nuggets won at home in what was a losing battle from the start for the Warriors, who traveled to Denver after playing late into the evening, in Sacramento on the previous night and contended with our Kansas based airport in the early AM, while the Nuggets had strung together three of their best games of the season and had been in town for a while.

I refuse and will continue to refuse to give any amount of credence to the BS that the altitude has any meaningful effect on any game's outcome, at least until the conversation starts about how large a role time zone isolation plays in Denver's road games but to deny the toll our airport plays on visiting teams on B2B games would be disingenuous. It absolutely drains already tired teams. Apart from that, the only effectual factors in terms of outcome indicators in home-court advantage are incumbent on the schedule and the fans and if I'm honest, due to the enormous transplant population in Denver, the home fans don't often represent and this must change if we wish to enjoy watching the Nuggets play meaningful games in April. I swear I'll let this topic go at some point. The point is, due to their rabid home crowd fans, the Warriors home-court edge is drastically more prevalent than Denver's and it's up to Nuggets fans to change this.

As for this game, Denver has fared surprisingly well vs the greatest team currently on the planet, in recent years and is amongst the very few teams who present match-up problems for the world champs. Not enough to win a series or likely even a playoff game against them but enough so that they are annually good for at least one w against them in the regular season, usually two. The Nuggets are playing the 2nd of a B2B (please adults, I beg of you, no more SEGABABA coochie-coo), both games at home, after one of the more bittersweet victories in recent memory, in which Jokic once again was mentioned historically in the same breath as Wilt Chamberlain (while the national media focused on saliva in LaLaLand), as he become only the 2nd player in NBA history to score 30 or more in a 3D without missing a single field-goal attempt (in addition to four steals, a blocked shot, impeccable defense and zero turnovers.) Simultaneously, Big Honey became the only player in NBA history who has had a 35-point triple double without a turnover. Eat your heart out Stilt! Unfortunately, much of the luster was tarnished by what looked to be a semi-serious injury sustained by the teams vocal leader, Will Barton. At the time of this pre-game piece there is still no word of his MRI results. Obviously I hope for the best as this team sorely needs The People's Champion.

The Warriors lineup is deadly as always, yet again. They still have the all-world starting five and have Boogie in waiting, to flick energy into what will undoubtedly be tired legs in the second half of the season. They are the odds-on favorites to again win the championship and rightly so. Houston appears to be falling to the pack a bit this season with the loss of Ariza and the subtraction by addition of Melo, while the rest of the West has only gotten better. Obviously, The championship (until Boston proves otherwise) will be crowned prior to the main event, once the Western conference championship has taken place. LeBron knew this and it was a key factor in his abandoning the Eastern Conference.

Ed update: I just took a look at the Warriors pre-game piece as a means to dot T's and cross I's and had to laugh out loud that the sentiment of it was centered around home court advantage, not that I don't think it's fair or that it's wrong for them to disagree, just that it was both of our focus today.

Prediction: Denver 109 - Golden State -111 (a quick glance at Golden State of mind reveals a similar prediction from contributor Duby Dub Dubs)

Go Nuggets!

In it, all of the disjointed/unsightly blanks below will be filled, complete with data/analysis and more snark than "Snarknado VI: Snakenado", which I'm told is about a pessimistic, albino, black mamba who emerges from micro-bursts to torment the people of Los Angeles with shady tweets.

There be monsters; shameless, personal plug alert! You don't have to order from the link of course if you are in the Denver Metro area, as I'm more than happy to meet up with you (please refrain from bringing rotten tomatoes), drastically lowering the cost, as Poshmark takes a healthy cut as well as shipping & handling. (After these messages... Er Nicknames)

Ed note: Be kind: The Dub's roster is one of the worst in the league, in terms of giving me ready made nicknames to play with. Lots of low hanging fruit, very little in the way of material. I welcome input from Warriors fans on how to proceed with their nicknames in the future. Side note, I'm amazed that Jehoshaphat was in my spellcheck dictionary from last season when he was I believe, with Utah.

TPM Per-Minute Splits Through Game 2:

TPM-2018-2019-Game-2.0.png

Analysis:

Qtr1- The Nuggets trot out their non-standard starting five, consisting of The Blue Arrow, Just Gary Harris, Torrey FUCKING Craig, The Anchorman & Big Honey. The Warriors counter with the incomparably dominant lineup of Curry, Thompson, Durant, Green and Jones (four of these things are not like the other.) Ally is... I miss Alley :( Rookie Sensation Phillip Lindsay airballs the free throw prior to the game. That's a goocher! Denver is now 0-3 on opening tips this season. I may be in the minority but I LIKE the new home jerseys. The red lettering and navy blue numbers really pop. Craig hits his first three which is a good sign. Jokic is off to a very poor start tonight, especially defensively. He has got to find the aggressive fire. He can post Green up and score all night long and does on one play; just what the Dr ordered. Denver is getting the favorable whistle early and not capitalizing from the charity stripe. Jones has his 2nd foul for GS at 7:10. The score is 12-10 Warriors at the first break, which comes at 6:14. Curry has been held in check thus far with a goose egg offensively. Beasley is first off the pine for the Nuggets.

Craig is all over the offensive glass in this one. Juancho checks in for him at 5:16, down three. Jones has his third foul for GS which doesn't really matter aside from the fact that it puts Denver in the bonus with 4:50 to go. Lyles is in for the Nuggets at this point. You knew it wouldn't last forever, as Curry sinks his first three of the night at 3:15. Plumlee checks in for Big Honey at this point, in what I assume tonight will be a 9 man rotation, rather than the ten who played in the first two games, prior to Barton's injury. I don't like how it happened but I do like that it happened, with regard to shortening the rotation by one. Denver has missed it's last 11 shots and they trail by seven with 2:39 to go. Curry BLATANTLY sticks his leg out at Plumlee for him to run into and is rewarded with the star call, from 35 feet away. That was weak officiating. Morris is what I'm assuming is the final insertion into the lineup, at 2:15, down 10. Plumlee bricks two more free throws and is now 0- the season. This game DEFINITELY does not have a very good flow to it and that starts with the Nuggets star center and his lack of energy. Plumlee finally sticks one from the line, two in fact and the lead is now eight. That's going to be the final discrepancy. The Nuggets are paced in TPM by Murray +5 in what was a lackluster 1st QTR, as they are down 25-17 after one

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Qtr2- The Nuggets need a strong contribution from Lyles immediately if they expect to stay in this one. The world champs are clutching and grabbing on every possession and not getting away with it tonight. Lyles seems to have flipped the ol' confidence switch and Denver starts out the QTR with far better pace. The lead is down to three as the first break occurs at 10:35. The Dub's are abusing Denver on the offensive glass with 'Sap and Jokic on the bench. Green collects his third foul for GS, at 7:04 up three. Bell has been sent into the game to foul at this time. He promptly does so. The Nuggets bench is redeeming themselves tonight. The lead is six at 5:32. Curry gets what is the third foul on a three point attempt for the Nuggets, the 4-point variety and this one was legit. I've been impressed with Torrey Craig tonight and Denver is going to need a whole lot more of this if Barton is out for an extended period. Murray picks up his third foul and checks out at 4:30, down five. Morris needs to start drilling his threes or his driving lanes will never open up. HIT YOUR FREE THROWS FFS NUGGETS! They are only 14-24; unacceptable for this very good free throw shooting team.

KD is overheard saying "free throws are keeping them in this, dog" to one of the officials. Patrick is overheard thinking, "then stop clutching and grabbing every time down KD." by his dog. Seriously, she barked at me for being so judgemental. Harris has kept the Nuggets in this one, truth be told. Denver is tightening the screws defensively as they cut it to one with 2:31 to go. The teams trade buckets as the quarter comes to a close with Golden State coming out on top of the exchanges. Craig picks up his third on a bad foul, of a well contested KD jumper. He should have left well enough alone and laid off once he forced the fade away J. Jokic and Harris are the first Nuggets in double figures of a game they have no business even being in, after missing 12 free throws. Denver is paced in TPM by Harris +12 as they trail 49-47 at the half.

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Qtr3- The key to the second half IMHO will be creating more movement without the ball and generating easy buckets as a result. Denver only had 10 assists in the first half. Oh ya and MAKE YOUR FUCKING FREE THROWS! It's even Steven at 49 with 10:27 to go. Jones picks up his 4th at 10:14. Again, I can not possibly stress enough how little his personal foul total matters. I basically just cinched a Jones buzzer beating shot for the win tonight didn't I? Murray has some sort of calf injury and heads to the locker room at 8:00. No bueno. KD FINALLY earns that T he's been begging for all night at 7:14. Denver steals the lead away on what was an obvious foul by Harris and KD is PISSED. It's knotted up at 61 as the pace is finally to the home team's liking at 5:53. Harris is absolutely carrying the Nuggets tonight.

Murry checks back in with a four point lead at 5:00 and the collective sigh of relief aspirated by Nuggets fans, can be felt all the way to Oak-town. He promptly acquires his 4th foul and must sit back down on his bruised tibia. Morris finally gets that first three of the season out of the way and the Nuggets lead by eight. Denver is wisely begging Green to shoot jumpers and he's obliging. This game has that definite down-to-the-wire feel to it. Green now has his 4th foul with 1:15 to go and the Nuggets up by eight. Plumlee's mouth is bleeding but Plumlee-badger don't give a shit as he becomes the third Nugget to reach double figures. The bench squad ends the period with a redemptive flurry and momentum is squarely in the Nuggets' court. Denver is paced in TPM by Morris +14 & Harris +20 as they lead 80-70 after three.

___________________________________________________________________________________________

Qtr4- The Nuggets turn it over on consecutive possessions prompting an early timeout by Coach Malone, following a patented, lost in the shuffle, corner three by Klay Thompson. Jokic has a 2D at 10:15 with 16-10. In a comical turn of events, Jokic gets fouled shooting a three in which he was utterly clobbered by Iggy, who was so exhausted that he fouled as a means to beg out of the contest. Jokic is suddenly aggressive at just the right time and Denver leads by 10 with 7:45 to go. Curry is catching fire simultaneously, as is his wont and the lead is now seven. You can do the math on that one. Ok Curry, you're good. Stop kicking that leg out and begging for calls. It's no better than Harden in terms of cheating the game, not to mention that it's exceedingly dangerous, in a Dahntay Jones sort of way. Stop it! GS is the clear aggressor ATM and the Nuggets lead is down to four. Is it just me or does Curry never seem to avoid foul trouble against ONLY Denver? He draws his fourth. If I was GS I'd drive every time down as the refs WILL call it, foul or not. It's just good strategy.

Denver is in the bonus, up four with 4:07 to play. Unbelievably, even Jokic misses two at the stripe. It's contagious tonight! Who expected a defensive game in this one? Certainly not me. Denver leads by two as their shot has gone cold late, with 1:45 to play. A layup by The Mole and this one is tied up and going down to the wire, as predicted. Thompson is called for grabbing Harris for no less than the third time on one play and Gary ALSO missed one of two at the line, giving Denver a one point lead, in a game they have no business of being in. Curry misfires on a three and Denver is working the clock. Murray's layup appears to be goaltended but no matter, Right? Millsap is there for the rebound and is sent to the line to brick one of two. This free throw shooting is completely out of left field. Green is fouled after passing the ball in, which might just be best case scenario for Denver. He hits 1-2 and the ball is batted out of bounds after an uncalled foul by Jokic. This one will be reviewed. Denver is awarded the ball, up one with 9.2 to play. Marlowe accuses Phonz' of being a homer. Love it! Denver can't inbound and wisely calls a timeout. Denver advances to half court and gets it in to Murray who is fouled with 7.7 to play FOR THE LOVE OF FUCK SINK YOUR FREE THROWS! He misses the front end! He hits the 2nd, Juancho gets a game clinching swat and this one is ova! The Nuggets are paced in TPM by Lyles +10, Morris +14 Jokic +18 & Harris +21 as they win 100-98 and improve to 3-0 (despite being 0-3 on opening tips) vs the world champs and have now held all three opponents under the century mark. When you can shoot this poorly from the free throw line and still beat a good team, you've got something cookin'.
