I love where the Nuggets are headed. I think the pieces of Jokic, Murray, Harris and Juancho will help form an elite lineup two years from now.
So with that assumption (and I think Connelly is probably not far off with his thinking) what moves need to be made moving forward?
The first thing is to make sure there are ample minutes for Murray and Juancho. Murray should be starting. Juancho doesn't need to be, but should be playing 25+ per night. Right now with Barton, Chandler and Gallo getting minutes there isn't enough for Juancho. That needs to change.
So IMO you move on from either Gallo or Chandler. I don't care which one although it seems easier to keep Chandler since we actually hold the rights to him at a good price. Gallo will most likely get overpaid. At this point (unfortunately with his bum knee) he is an older, less athletic, more expensive version of Juancho (yes he is currently better in many ways, but long term this is what I see).
Plumlee? I don't see a long term fit for him so why pay him big money? If he comes back at a friendly deal then he isn't bad to have on the roster. His bad free throw shooting is a huge liability.
Barton? I would see what you can get for Barton. He is a boom or bust player that isn't always fond of making the right play. My model with this group is the Warriors in terms of ball movement and Barton does not fit that mold. I would move him for whatever I could get.
Nelson? He is a good backup, nothing more. 10-15 mins a night unless injury. Yes he is safe for Coach Malone, but developing your team is the MOST important. You don't win championships with Jameer Nelson playing major minutes. 3 years from now he won't even be in the league.
Mudiay? The big question mark. The problem with Mudiay at this point is that he shoots waaaay too much. He isn't a good shooter. He isn't particularly a good ball handler. He is a decent passer but no Jason Kidd. He is also still young and extremely thick and athletic. I still think your best value is in developing him. Get him to buy in defensively where he has the body to be great.
Faried? I love Faried's energy and his attitude seemed to be really good on the court. He can rebound with anyone. I keep him on the roster at least through the end of his team friendly contract. His defense has improved and he provides toughness under the basket.
Draft? I draft the highest upside player I can get regardless of position. We don't need a solid SF or any other position for that matter. What we need is a guy who if he is right has the ability to be a star in the NBA. This draft is filled with those types of players (boom or bust). I trust that the staff will be able to find the boom player regardless of position.
