Why and How to Land Buddy Hield, or: The Cock Takes a Walk

First post. Long, long time lurker.

A reader today suggested that one of the primary reasons for disinterest in our beloved team is that fact that we haven't drafted a recognizable American college player since Carmelo. I tend to think there is some truth to this. We've had the Lawson's and the Faried's of the world, great college players to be sure, but no one with that wow factor.

There is one player who may be realistically attainable that has enough game and name recognition to sell some tickets. And for us diehards, he actually fills a need. His name is Buddy Hield.

Now i'm not saying i'm a great fan of the player, but I do think he will have a long and more than serviceable NBA career. I view him as a high floor/moderate ceiling type. He's also exciting in the JR/Mahmoud mold. When he gets it going, it's must see TV. That's something this roster could use a little more of.

So how do we get there? Let's say the Celtics land the third pick and Hield is on the board. This is a little high for some tastes, but play along. We're trying to get a good/great player who can also sell tickets. Let's also say we stay in the 7th spot. My proposal is pretty simple. We send Gallo and the 7th pick to Boston for Hield and the 16th pick.

Boston finally gets their man, easily absorbs the cap hit next season, and retains a mid-lottery selection. The Nuggets get a premier shooter with some box office draw, additional cap space, and retains 3 additional first rounders. If the Nuggets were so inclined, they could package a couple of those and probably get high enough to draft Luwawu or possibly Brown. And they would likely still have a draft and stash pick remaining.

This would signify a move toward a more comprehensive rebuild, and TC has given no indication that this is his intention. You might also be overpaying for a player who could possibly fall into your lap. Draft Express seems to think this is a possibility.

Still, a bold move may be required. In the age raining threes, Hield might give this team and basketball community the kind of jolt it needs to wake from it's slumber.
