Ian Clark deserves a roster spot over Gary Harris

Hey Nuggets Nation, it's your Gary Harris hater back at it again. Through all of this free agency, Lawson talk, and Mudiay excitement I wanted to give everyone an update on our love-able hard working first round draft pick: Gary Harris.

My "Gary Harris is Statistically the Worst Shooter in the NBA" post on February 25 received some backlash as the survey showed that 73% of you believe that Harris is not a bust. Fair enough. However, let's give all of you an update on where he is after some more NBA action and a Summer league where he shot 2 for 15 from 3 (not a typo).

Here are his NBA regular season stats I mentioned in February:

Field Goal: 27%

3 Pt Field Goal: 21%

Player Efficiency: 5.12 (347/348 qualified players)

True Shooting: 37% (last in the league)

After an additional 26 more games, he finished the season:

Field Goal: 30%

3 Pt Field Goal: 20%

Player Efficiency: 4.98 (365/366 qualified players)

True Shooting: 39% (last in the league)

So nothing really changed. He did not improve. Granted, you all understand this by now that Harris is a horrible shooter. How about the other areas where Harris potentially adds to the team? Here are his other stats:

Real Plus Minus: -7.05 (473/474 qualified players)

Wins Above Replacement: -2.20 (467/474 qualified players)

Offensive Real Plus Minus: -4.66 (469/474 qualified players)

Defensive Real Plus Minus: -2.39 (421/474 qualified players)

Why do I go to all of this length to show you this? Roster spots. After the Lawson trade we are running out of room, but more importantly players like Erick Green and Ian Clark may be left out in the cold.

Ian Clark>Gary Harris. Clark might not be a Big 10 guy, a first round draft pick, and a guy many are familiar with, but he would be my vote over Harris as a backup at shooting guard. Clark shot 50% from 3 during summer league and once was 3rd in the entire NCAA in 3 pt field goal percentage at 46%. He's bounced around the D league and with the Jazz and hasn't really had a great opportunity yet. Then there's fit. The Nuggets are not an efficient shooting team. Mudiay is an exciting addition, but we know that he's not here to be a shooter. The Nuggets were 21st, 24th, and 25th in offensive efficiency, true shooting, and effective field goal percentage last year. Gary Harris does not help solve this problem.
