Offensive Nuggets 2: Koufos vs. Mozgov

Let me drop some truth on you guys:

Kosta Koufos is a much better NBA player than Timofey Mozgov

Before you get all crazy on me, and talk to me about things like "potential", let me stop you and say, "I get it." I get that Timo *looks* like a better NBA player. That he's got size and a build that Koufos can't compete with. But the numbers don't lie. And for the 2011-2012 NBA season Koufos has outplayed not only Timofey, but just about anyones expectations. You might say that this is partly because Koufos is playing against inferior competition, mostly being a second stringer while Mozgov is seeing starter minutes and you'd be completely right. Still, considering the way that Koufos is playing, considering his age and the relatively poor way Timo has played, its time to reassess our depth chart.

Koufos is 7-0, 265 and just turned 23 years old.

Timofey is 7-1, 250 and 25 years old, nearly 26.

PER: Koufos 82nd (17.2), Timo 267th (12.1)

TS%: Koufos 25th (.609), Timo: 163rd (.534)

ORB%: Koufos: 10th (15.4), TImo: 115th (8.5)

DRB%: Koufos: 29th (23.6), Timo: 59th (21.9)

Block%: Timo: 31st (4.8), Koufos: 38 (4.5)

TOV%: Koufos: 349th (17.3), Timo: 378th (19.4)

ORtg: Koufos: 61st (113), Timo: 311st (97)

DRtg: Koufos: 120th (101) Timo: 175th (103)

WS/48: Koufos: 64th (.153), Timo: 280th (0.061)

Koufos is KILLING Mozgov in just about every important category for a center. Not only that, but he's playing at a level comparable to other good-to-excellent NBA players. Mozgov, however, is clearly not. Koufos' PER puts him smack between Serge Ibaka and Kris Humphries while Mozgov's PER puts him right above Brian Scalabrine. Need I say more?

Given our depth and relative youth, Koufos should definitely become the established back-up center behind McGee. In relatively similar minutes he has vastly out-played Timo, who is ahead of him on the depth chart. If anything, the Nuggets should probably look to move Timo, while his perceived value is still pretty high. At the very least, I don't see them offering him a contract. Unless he vastly improves his play, he simply isn't worth it.
