Rajon Rondo and Fat Lever

Rondo_lever_mediumWatching Rondo come into his own this season, I kept trying to think about what historical point guard he reminds me of, what with his cat-like quickness, ability to get to the rim, uncanny rebounding skills, ability to get a triple-double on any night, and his knack for getting the ball to his teammates in scoring position. The more I watch Rondo, the more he reminds me of Nuggets great Lafayette "Fat" Lever.

Lever AVERAGED 18 ppg, 8 assists, and 8 rebounds for 5 or so straight seasons in Denver, when they were winning divisions and going to the conference finals. Like Rondo, Lever had amazing quickness, the ability to find his teammates in scoring position, incredible rebounding skills for his size, and the ability to score at the rim. He was also an increadibly cool customer on the court. Rondo might be a bit better assist man, and Lever the better defender, but the two player are a lot a like. I give Lever the edge in leadership skills.

What do you think, is Rondo the reincarnation of Fat Lever??

By the way, it is time to retire Fat Lever's jersey in Denver. Fat is the Nuggets all-time best PG (sorry Chauncey, but Lever's longetivity in Denver gives him the edge), and was a triple double machine in the 1980's when Denver had one of their best teams.

Why isn't Fat given the props he deserves in Denver???

[Andrew's Note: Great comparison by "ACEIII". Earlier in the postseason, I compared Lever and teammate Alex English to what's happening in Oklahoma City with Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant. Lever (and English) remain as two of the most underrated all-stars in NBA history.]
