Wally: "They [the Nuggets] are very interested in me"...

Ap-wally_mediumThe Denver Post's Woody Paige quotes free agent Wally Szczerbiak as saying the Nuggets are interested in him.

Paige goes on to advocate for the Nuggets to sign Szczerbiak, citing his love for Wally's father from his ABA days and the younger Szczerbiak's career stats.  No offense to Paige, but I trust the Nuggets are looking closely at Szczerbiak's clutch shooting percentage from the last two seasons rather than his dad's ABA game tapes.

Everyone has a different definition of clutch shooting percentage, but I'd specifically like to know Szczerbiak's shooting percentage when the shot clock and game clock were within three seconds and what those percentages look like when the game is within five points.  Because from my cheap seats view last season, it seemed like Szczerbiak frequently missed crucial shots that could have put Cavalier opponents away for good.  But I'd be happy to be proven wrong/ignorant.  (It should be noted that Szczerbiak doesn't even show up over at 82games.com's clutch shooting table for last season, but neither does Denver Stiffs' preference for the open wing slot, Steve Novak.)

The Nuggets unquestionably need a drop dead shooter and to be fair to the Nuggets (if they are indeed interested in Szczerbiak) the pickings are slim out there.  Would you rather have Flip Murray than Szczerbiak?  Rashad McCants?  Kareem Rush?  I think I'd rather have Wesley Person back than any of those guys.  Most of Nuggets Nation's preference would be Novak.  But as several readers pointed out yesterday, the Clippers cap flexibility almost guarantees they'll match whatever paltry offer the Nuggets could throw at Novak.

Could Wally Szczerbiak be the next Denver Stiff?  If Szczerbiak really wants to be a Nugget, he should head to his local tattoo parlor immediately.
